WNA’s for-profit business services have a new look

The Wisconsin Newspaper Association has added an advertising sales director to its staff as the association rebrands its for-profit division.

WNA Services, Inc., a wholly owned for-profit subsidiary of the Wisconsin Newspaper Association, is rebranding itself as Targeted Media Services. The new name unites WNA’s existing media monitoring service, News Tracker, with Targeted Advertising Services, the new advertising sales division.

Tom Johnson, a former publisher and sales executive with more than 35 years of experience in the newspaper business, will lead Targeted Advertising Services as the WNA’s advertising services director. Johnson will be responsible for pursuing advertising sales and managing statewide and regional accounts on behalf of WNA-member newspapers.

“We’re excited to have Tom on our team,” said Beth Bennett, executive director of the WNA. “By bringing Tom on board, the WNA has a dedicated sales expert in our office to help advertisers reach new audiences and to drive revenue to our members.”

For more than 28 years, Johnson was publisher of the Waukon Standard newspaper and oversaw operations of First Street Graphics Printing in Waukon, Iowa. He served on the board of directors of Graphics, Inc., a central web printing plant in Calmar, Iowa, and was on the Iowa Newspaper Association (INA) Board of Directors for six years. Johnson also served on the INA Foundation board, including one year as president.

From 2003-11, Johnson was the sales manager for News Publishing, Inc., publications in Middleton, Sauk City, New Glarus, Mount Horeb and Cross Plains. News Publishing is based in Black Earth, Wis. He left in 2011 to pursue other career opportunities in sales.

Customized Newspaper Advertising (CNA) previously managed statewide display advertising sales, which will now be handled by Targeted Advertising Services. CNA will continue to sell statewide classified ads.
