VonRuden was expected to fill a soon-to-be-open reporting position at the Clark County Press when editor Ryan Spoehr returned to the Banner Journal as a reporter. Valorie Brecht was expected to take over as editor and VonRuden would then fill her role as reporter. Instead, it was decided that Spoehr would remain on the Neillsville staff and VonRuden would fill the Black River Falls opening.

The Banner Jounal announced the addition Wednesday, the same day Spoehr was previously expected to join the staff.

VonRuden, a Black River Falls resident, graduated in 2012 from UW-Oshkosh with a double major in political science and English. Since college, VonRuden has worked for a charter school district in Boston, served in the Peace Corps and taught English in Rwanda.
