Wisconsin State Taxes Rose 1.7% in 2017

State taxes and fees in Wisconsin totaled$18.8 billion in 2017, a 1.7% increase over 2016.  The major state taxes are individual and corporate income taxes, sales taxes, the gas tax, and the unemployment insurance payroll tax; major fees include those for vehicle registration and hunting licenses.

The individual income tax is Wisconsin’s primary source for funding state government.  Collections totaled $8.0 billion in 2017, a 3.9% increase over 2016.  Revenues exceeded sales ($5.2 billion) and corporate income taxes ($920.9 million) combined.
