Police body camera study committee to meet July 26

The Legislative Council Study Committee on the Use of Police Body Cameras will meet at 10 a.m. July 26 in Room 411 South of the State Capitol in Madison.

The Study Committee is tasked with reviewing law enforcement policies regarding the use of body cameras and recommend legislation to establish uniform procedures regarding the retention and release of body camera video for state and local law enforcement agencies. WisEye is expected to stream coverage of the meeting.

Presentations are expected to be made by Amanda Essex, of the National Conference of State Legislatures; Paul Ferguson and Spencer Gustafson, of the Wisconsin Department of Justice; Doug Wiorek, of the Milwaukee Police Department; Andy Phillips and Dector de la Mora, of Von Briesen & Roper; and Laken Ferreira, associate government affairs managers of Axon, according to the agenda.

WNA Foundation Board member and WNA legal hotline attorney James Friedman is among the committee members. Other committee members are Sens. Patrick Testin and Chris Larson; Reps. Chris Taylor and John Spiros; Monroe County District Attorney Kevin Croninger; Catherine Dorl, attorney manager for the Office of the State Public Defender; WISN-TV News Director Ben Hart; Brown Deer Chief of Police Mike Kass; and St. Croix County Sheriff’s Capt. Jeff Klatt.
