Records: Outagamie sheriff candidate didn’t pass background check

APPLETON – A candidate running for Outagamie County sheriff failed a background check earlier this year after he applied for a local police chief job, records show.

Alex Bebris was offered and accepted the Hortonville police chief’s job in February, contingent upon a background check. The findings of that investigation raised sufficient concern for the Village Board to unanimously rescind the employment offer on March 6, Behnke wrote.

On March 7, the morning after the village’s retraction, Bebris withdrew from consideration for the job because he had been offered two contracts for his private security consulting business, according to the story.

Diversified Investigations, the Appleton-based company that conducted the check, found a number of “flags to consider” regarding Bebris, according to records reviewed by USA TODAY NETWORK-Wisconsin. They included the failure to disclose information, gaps in employment history, and questions surrounding his reason for leaving the Milwaukee Police Department. He also left departments in both Menasha and Adams County under separation agreements, according to the background check.

Bebris is one of three candidates running for Outagamie County sheriff in the Aug. 14 Republican primary.
