Longtime Journal Sentinel columnist D’Amato says ‘goodbye’

Gary D’Amato

After 28 years at the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, sports columnist Gary D’Amato is leaving for a new position covering golf for Madison-based Killarney Golf Media. He’ll be writing for the website Wisconsin.golf.

D’Amato started on the sports desk at the Milwaukee Journal in 1990. He went on to cover 11 Olympic Games, five Ryder Cups, three Super Bowls, the Indianapolis 500 and the Daytona 500. He covered sports around the world, including from nine countries on four continents.

In 2017, D’Amato became the third writer inducted into the Wisconsin Golf Hall of Fame, and the first since the 1960s. He started covering golf for the Journal during the 1992 U.S. Open at Pebble Beach and has since covered more than 70 major tournaments, including every Masters since 1993.

D’Amato has been named Wisconsin Sportswriter of the Year three times, in addition to receiving multiple honors from the Golf Writers Association of America and the Associated Press Sports Editors.

In his new position, D’Amato will cover golf throughout the state, while also testing new equipment and profiling the world’s top golf courses.

“Those of you who have followed me over the years probably know that golf is my first love,” D’Amato said in the column. “In fact, quite often I received emails from readers angry about a column I’d written telling me to ‘stick to golf.’

“They’ll be happy to know I’m taking their advice.”
