Southern Door hires former Advocate sports editor as athletic director

Korey Mallien

BRUSSELS – Korey Mallien, a former longtime Door County Advocate sports editor, is the new athletic director for Southern Door School District, the Advocate reported.

Mallien, a 1987 Southern Door High School graduate, earned his journalism degree at UW-Oshkosh before starting his career as a reporter for the Rhinelander Daily News in 1992. He returned to Door County that summer and went on to work 25 years at the Advocate. During his tenure, Mallien won numerous national and state newspaper awards, including four consecutive WNA Best Sports Pages honors.

After working for the Door County Economic Development Corp., for nearly a year, Mallien is excited to get back to sports.

“I feel like this is a better fit for what I really love and have a passion for, and that’s sports,” Mallien told the Advocate. “It’s what I’ve always been around from my first journalism job — the high school scene especially.”

Mallien fills the opening created by former AD Michelle Kanipes, who left to become Washington Island’s middle and high school principal.
