Veteran journalist Dave Zweifel, FOIC President Bill Lueders, FOIC co-vice president and attorney Christa Westerberg, Wisconsin Supreme Court Justice Rebecca Dallet and Citizens for Responsible Government field operations director Orville Seymer are all scheduled to speak. The event begins at 3 p.m. Tuesday in the Assembly Parlor at the Wisconsin State Capitol, 2 E. Main Street, Madison.

Attendees of the open government celebration also will have the opportunity to witness the unveiling of open government artwork and the Council’s new logo.

On Oct. 31, 1978, the Wisconsin Freedom of Information Council was created by journalists to protect First Amendment rights. The Council seeks to safeguard access to information that citizens must have to act responsibly in a free and democratic society.

Wisconsin FOIC believes a free and unfettered press is vital to the democratic process. Openness in government benefits the public interest because an informed citizenry is best able to exercise its civic function to participate in the workings of government.

The FOIC includes members representing the public as well as representatives from each of the following organizations: Wisconsin Newspaper Association, Wisconsin Associated Press, Wisconsin Broadcasters Association, Broadcast News Council, Society of Professional Journalists and Wisconsin News Photographers Association.
