MAYVILLE – Andrew and Laura Johnson, newspaper owners and Gold Star parents who were integral in the effort to find a photo for every Wisconsin soldier on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C., have succeeded in yet another goal.

The first phase of the Gold Star Memorial Trail — a project the two have lobbied on behalf of for several years — opened on Nov. 21. The non-motorized trail honoring fallen service members from Wisconsin is expected to eventually run from Mayville to Beaver Dam. A grand opening event is planned for National Trails Day, June 1, 2019.

Andrew Johnson is publisher of the (Mayville) Dodge County Pionier, the Campbellsport News and the Kewaskum Statesman.
