Spicer’s book, “The Bounceback,” tells the story of John Zander, a high school senior and basketball player who struggles with friendship, jealousy, parents, a bully and a lack of playing time. The story is not about Spicer’s life, though he admits to sharing some characteristics with Zander.

Spicer is a Gays Mills native, and he covered sports at his hometown newspaper, the Crawford County Independent from January 2006 to May 2007. He later made stops at the (Osseo) Tri-County News, the Augusta Area Times and The Clark County Press in Neillsville.

During his time as a reporter, Spicer also worked as a substitute teacher. After leaving journalism, he became a paraeducator at Waunakee High School.
