Berthiaume, who started as a reporter in 1989, voluntarily accepted an early retirement package from Gannett Co. Inc., which owns and operates the USA TODAY Network, of which The Post-Crescent is a member.

After being named features editor in 1994, Berthiaume served in multiple management roles in the Appleton newsroom over the next 24 years. He was named news director at The Post-Crescent in April 2017.

Berthiaume named two highlights of his career as the 2002 opening of the Fox Cities Performing Arts Center and The Post-Crescent‘s early coverage of the Mile of Music festival in Appleton.

Jim Fitzhenry, vice president of news for USA TODAY NETWORK-Wisconsin, will oversee The Post-Crescent newsroom until a successor is named.
