After an extensive career in newspapers, the race is Johnson’s first for elected office. His opponent, Ross Purdy, is a radiologic technologist also making his first foray into politics.

A Dodge County resident for 32 years, Johnson told the Pionier that he wants to “give back to the community that has been very good to my family and me.” Johnson also told the newspaper he believes he can help shape Dodge County government to better serve its citizens.

Johnson is the former publisher of the Pionier, as well as the Campbellsport News and Kewaskum Statesman. He sold the trio of weekly newspapers to Multi Media Channels in March 2020.

Elected WNA president in 2010, Johnson went on to serve several years as WNA Foundation president. He stepped down from the role in 2018, when he was named NNA president. He also was inducted into the Wisconsin Newspaper Hall of Fame in 2018.

In addition to his extensive involvement in the newspaper industry, Johnson has served on the board of several community organizations, including the Mayville Area Chamber of Commerce, Horicon Chamber of Commerce, Main Street Mayville and the Mayville Rotary Club. He was named citizen of the year in 2017 by the Mayville Chamber.
