Wisconsin’s state budget still has room for improvement

Though the state of Wisconsin’s general fund finished the 2018 fiscal year with the lowest deficit levels on record, there is still room for improvement, according to a new Wisconsin Policy Forum report. Especially considering most other states have had no deficit at all in recent years.

The state’s general fund closed the 2018 fiscal year on June 30 with a $1.25 billion deficit, down from $1.63 billion a year earlier.

But since budget improvements are typically followed by a return to larger deficits during and after downturns, the improvement doesn’t eliminate the need for caution about the state’s economic future.
