MADISON – Award-winning political reporter Jessie Opoien is taking over the role of opinion editor for The Cap Times, the Madison newspaper announced Friday.

Opoien replaces Lynn Danielson, who is retiring. A Wisconsin native, Opoien earned her journalism degree from Iowa State University before starting her career at the Oshkosh Northwestern in 2011. She covered government, politics and education in Oshkosh before leaving for a similar role at The Cap Times in 2013.

While covering the State Capitol in Madison, Opoien has won numerous WNA Better Newspaper Contest awards, including four in 2018. Her series on the opioid crisis in Wisconsin took home first place honors for ongoing/extended coverage.

In her new role, Opoien will serve on the newspaper’s editorial board and write a weekly column. In her first column, Opoien expressed her hope for facilitating thoughtful political conversation among readers.
