WAUKESHA – The Freeman celebrated its 160th birthday Friday, publishing a front-page story with historical photos and a timeline of major events in the Waukesha newspaper’s long history.

On March 29, 1859, the first issue of the then-weekly paper was published. A year’s subscription to The Freeman at the time cost $1.50, or $1 if paid in advance.

Among the highlights in The Freeman timeline are its changes in ownership in 1873, 1978, 1983 and 1997. It also details the newspaper’s moves to new buildings in 1879, 1919, 1937 and 1991.
