In a column this week, Jerde writes about participating in this year’s event, which raises money for the UW Carbone Cancer Center. She became a patient at the Carbone center earlier this year, following a March diagnosis with diffuse large B-cell lymphoma.

It’s an aggressive form of cancer but also one with a 60 percent cure rate.

Jerde wrote that while many readers already knew about her diagnosis, the event served as an opportunity for “coming out of the closet as a cancer patient.”

Jerde and her husband, Jay, were among more than 400 participants who registered for the run-walk. This year’s event raised $35,000 for the Carbone Cancer Center.
