MADISON – Gov. Tony Evers on Friday appointed Attorney James Friedman of Godfrey & Kahn to the Wisconsin Public Records Board.

Friedman, who serves as the WNA legal hotline attorney, is a member of the WNA Foundation and WNA Services boards. Evers selected Friedman to serve a term “at the pleasure of the Governor.”

In a letter announcing the appointment, Evers told Friedman he looked forward to working with him “to find innovative ways of delivering services and implementing positive change for the citizens of our state.”

The board is responsible for the preservation of state records, and state agencies must have written approval from the board to dispose of records.

A 2015 board decision to change its definition of transitory records generated significant public outcry, eventually leading the board to rescind the change. Retention provisions must be revisited every 10 years, and since the board reverted back to the 2010 definition, it must reassess the issue by 2020.
