The acquisition was the latest in a string of recent Wisconsin newspaper purchases for APG, including the Beloit Daily News and The Gazette in Janesville. The company owns nearly two dozen daily and weekly newspapers in the state, most of which have been added since December.

Henry and Fred Berner launched Antigo’s daily newspaper in 1905 after buying the weekly Antigo Journal years earlier. The newspaper has remained in the family ever since.

Marie Berner, who took over as publisher following the death of her husband, Artemas Berner, was inducted into the Wisconsin Newspaper Hall of Fame in 2009. Fred Berner, Marie’s son, has run the paper since his mother’s death in 2011.
