Wisconsin Historical Society receives third consecutive grant to digitize historic newspapers

This Wisconsin Historical Society has been awarded a National Digital Newspaper Program grant for the third year in a row. The grant will fund continued digitization of historic Wisconsin newspapers.

Wisconsin joined the National Digital Newspaper Program in 2015 and has already contributed more 110,000 pages of local historic newspapers to the database.

The Wisconsin Newspaper Association is a partner with the Historical Society in the effort and hosts the pages on its Wisconsin Newspaper Archive, which is available through Badgerlink. WNA Executive Director Beth Bennett serves on the Society’s advisory board for the program.

The National Digital Newspaper Program — sponsored by the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Library of Congress — recently celebrated 15 million pages of historic newspapers in Chronicling America. Libraries, historical societies and other institutions have contributed newspapers to Chronicling America since 2005.

In June, the historical society announced the addition of the Vernon County Censor and the Odanah Star/Ashland Chronicle to Chronicling America.
