Former Post-Crescent reporter Maija Penikis dies at 78

Maija Penikis, of Milwaukee, who spent four decades as a reporter for The Post-Crescent in Appleton, died Wednesday, Aug. 7. She was 78.

Penikis was born Sept. 4, 1940, to Edgars and Lucija (Kurts) Penikis. Her family fled Latvia as political refugees after World War II, eventually settling in Milwaukee’s tight-knit Latvian community.

After graduating from UW-Milwaukee, Penikis took a reporting job with The Post-Crescent. She remained with the paper for more than 40 years, reporting on religion, health, education and general assignment topics. When she retired in 2002, Penikis moved back to Milwaukee.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Aug. 20, at Latvian Lutheran Church in Wauwatosa. Visitation will begin at 10 a.m., followed by the service at 11 a.m.
