Former Waukesha Freeman journalist, historian Libbie Nolan dies at 102

Elizabeth “Libbie” (Faulkner) Nolan, a former employee of The (Waukesha) Freeman, died Sunday in the town of Vernon, Wis. She was 102.

Born Jan. 10, 1917, she was the oldest daughter of Lee and Eva (Russell) Faulkner. After graduating from Mukwonago High School, she joined the UW-Madison Rural Arts Program and attended the Milwaukee Art Institute, Layton School of Art and the Cranbrook Art Academy in Michigan, focusing on sculpture and ceramics.

During World War II, Libbie met her future husband, Frank Nolan, while both were working at the Allis Chalmers Navy War plant. They had four children together, Denny, Tim, Betsey and Pat.

In addition to serving as an editor for both The Freeman and Landmark Magazine, the magazine of the Waukesha County Historical Society, Nolan also wrote a column titled “Around the County with Libbie Nolan.” She later worked as news editor of the Muskego Sun before retiring.

Visitation will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 26, at Vernon Presbyterian Church in Big Bend, Wis. Funeral services will follow at noon.
