MADISON – An updated edition of the State Bar of Wisconsin News Reporters’ Legal Handbook has been released.
The publication, first created in 1977, helps print journalists, broadcasters, photographers and public relations practitioners better understand the legal processes and legal terminology used in the Wisconsin Court System. It is now in its seventh edition.

In addition to covering the basics of working in a courtroom and standard court procedures, the handbook covers:
- electronic newsgathering and cameras in the courtroom
- judges’ considerations for working with the media
- journalist’s privilege
- public records and open meetings
- access to courtrooms and juvenile proceedings
- the legality of certain newsgathering techniques, including
- recording a telephone conversation
- access to private property
- defamation laws
The guide also includes six pages of online resources for journalists and a glossary of common legal terms.
