Started in September 1894, The Normal Advance had the style of a literary magazine, printing speeches, debates, literary essays and other musings. Twenty-five years later, the publication moved closer to a traditional newspaper model as it added headlines and began covering more events.

The next major step in its history came in 1968, when UW-Oshkosh added a journalism major and the newspaper was renamed The Advance-Titan. The new major increased the importance of making the student newspaper a place where aspiring journalists could learn on the job.

The newspaper published weekly at that time, with printing handled every Thursday by Ripon Printers. Today, it continues to print weekly, while providing more frequent coverage online.
