Six Ways to Make Your FOIA/Public Records Requests More Effective

Knowing how to craft a Freedom of Information Act request or a public records request is half the battle. Knowing how to proceed after that request is sent will help close the deal. Emily Le Coz of GateHouse Media and Tim Schmitt discuss tips and best practices.

MEET THE SPEAKERS

Emily Le Coz is GateHouse Media’s national data projects editor where she oversees data-driven stories in markets throughout the country. Prior to that, she served as deputy investigations editor for the Sarasota Herald-Tribune in Florida and was part of a team that won multiple national awards for its investigation of a racially biased court system. Emily hails from Wisconsin but spent most of her career in Mississippi covering local and state politics, working as an investigations reporter and stringing for Reuters.

Tim Schmitt has spent decades in various newsrooms — some print, and some broadcast. He was a sports reporter, news reporter, and then managing editor of his hometown paper, the Tonawanda (N.Y.) News, where he led an award-winning editorial page. He’s worked as an editor, staffer or longtime contributor with the Arizona Daily Sun in Flagstaff, the Mesa Tribune, the Arizona Republic, the alt-weekly Buffalo Current, and the Niagara Falls Gazette, where he was executive sports editor over four dailies.
