Providing Education

The WNA Foundation provides expert training for future and current journalists. These efforts include:

Annual Convention

The annual WNA Convention & Trade Show is our largest event of the year and features top-notch speakers, invaluable networking opportunities and the annual awards banquet.

College Scholarships

WNAF’s Summer Internship Program supports students and WNA-member newspapers alike. The program offers financial support to newspapers to hire an intern and also assists in placing top-notch journalism students with some of the state’s most progressive news businesses.

JEA Mentoring Program

The WNA Foundation’s Bart Brown Mentoring Program funds the efforts of the national Journalism Education Association Mentoring Program high school newspaper and yearbook advisers. WNAF was the first state press association foundation to provide financial support to the JEA mentoring program back in 2007. The program has carried on since 2011 thanks to the generosity of the late Bart Brown, former publisher of the Oconomowoc Enterprise.

News Fellows Program

Since 2014, the WNA Foundation has sent four college journalists to Washington, D.C to represent the state as part of the National Newspaper Association’s News Fellows program.

Trees Retreat

Every year, newspaper professionals from across Wisconsin head to Eagle River to participate in one of the association’s most treasured traditions. Sponsored by the WNA Foundation, the annual Trees Retreat is a time to connect, reflect and be inspired.

Wisconsin Civics Games

In response to declining civics education and participation, the WNA Foundation launched the Wisconsin Civics Games in 2018. More than 100 students from 25 schools participated in the inaugural Civics Games, which included four regional competitions on Feb. 23, 2019, and the state finals March 29, 2019, at the Wisconsin State Capitol.

WNAF Summer Internship Program

WNAF’s Summer Internship Program supports students and WNA-member newspapers alike. The program offers financial support to newspapers to hire an intern and also assists in placing top-notch journalism students with some of the state’s most progressive news businesses.
