Description

As a result of both an unexpected tragedy and a welcome success, Unified Newspaper Group needs two reporters, one to cover community news and the other to be a government watchdog.

UNG is not like other small weekly newspaper groups. We place a strong emphasis on growth and development. Whether you’re straight out of college or have a decade of journalism under your belt, we all have something to learn, and members of our team help one another and teach our frequent stream of interns.

We have a strong, collaborative news gathering organization that’s looking for talented journalists who love to tell stories about people and know how to relay important news in a way that people can understand and enjoy reading. Our operating unit comprises three weekly newspapers and one monthly newspaper devoted to the going-on in Stoughton, Oregon, Verona and Fitchburg. These are places where people are passionate about what’s happening in their suburban communities.

Flexibility is a major emphasis here. While you’ll undoubtedly have some night and weekend work, you’ll also be able to do some of it from home or a coffee shop. We provide up-to-date photo equipment and laptops, and we have a modern content management system and a workflow that’s designed to allow for editing from remote. We’re also completing a transition to a centralized design hub, so no pagination skills are necessary.

Our needs are for two community-oriented journalists. One will become deeply embedded in two government beats, and the other will become a well-known presence at community events, taking frequent photo assignments and networking to dig up story ideas and bring in submitted copy. Both will require an understanding of websites and social media, and a desire to work as part of a team is a must for all our journalists.

Both jobs are 35-40 hours per week and offer good benefits such as insurance, paid time off for volunteering, vacation, tuition reimbursement, healthy activity reimbursement, wellness programs, and much more. UNG is part of Woodward Community Media, a division of Woodward Communications Inc., an employee-owned company based in Dubuque, Iowa.
