Public Safety Reporter

La Crosse Tribune Published: September 4, 2018
Job Type

The La Crosse Tribune is seeking a reporter to uphold our tradition of excellence in covering public safety and law enforcement.

Public safety is paramount to neighborhood development and community growth in our beautiful three-state area. It’s an area with a relatively low crime rate, meaning that when crime occurs, it is big news for our digital and print readers. We need a reporter who is experienced at developing sources, digging for data and aggressively seeking and using public records to develop top-notch coverage.

Beyond courts and cops coverage, we need a reporter to examine law-enforcement and justice trends and explain them to our readers, from juvenile justice to mental health and its implications for law enforcement.

Our most recent criminal justice reporter won four Golden Gavel Awards from the Wisconsin Bar Association for her court coverage, and we’re looking for someone to maintain that high standard of reporting.

Digital skills are required – we want someone who is striving to break stories and find creative ways to tell them online. We’re looking for candidates who are as comfortable asking tough questions of government leaders as they are knocking on doors to talk with residents after a major crime.

The successful candidate will also have excellent time management and organizational skills, including the ability to deliver on deadline and manage multiple priorities. You’ll need a bachelor’s degree, excellent verbal skills and a willingness to improve.

We offer a competitive salary and benefits package that includes medical, dental, vision, 401(k) plan and more.
